Wine, Chees and Razmataz! The Good Things in life at the Sulafest 2010

02 - mar - 10

  W ind and the Sun

  Drapes and silk settees

 Hats and summer skirts

 Cheese and sausages

 Jazz and electronic  samba…

All these and fresh Sula wine blended together to make an eventful wine festival. The Sulafest 2010 marked the beginning of the harvest season for wine grapes this year. Founded by Rajeev Samant; the Sula Winery folklored as the winemaking company that set the mood right for a universal wine drinking culture in the country over decade ago.

Like a dual-script movie the festival revealed drama gyrating around the business of wine-making, tasting, drinking and trading  metaphorically linking its endeavor to the  independent music industry that synchronized as a  musical backdrop. The affair was grand! Flanked by  an expansive  Sula vineyard property, the Greek-style  amphitheatre was bustling with enthusiasm  and  activity.Like all great events this festival's hustle  and bustle began even before one entered the  Sulafest gates. Wine casts, stomping barrels, wine  tours and an inviting Tasting Room lounge all  prepped everybody up to what more was yet to come. As they make an entrance, the already spurred guests were greeted with hellos and knickknacks at the Sula Bazaar. Groups found themselves amidst an eclectic mix of offerings like dark chocolates from Faavia, an assortment of cheese from Britannia; poultry delights from Venky, pop designer accessories, Kamaltara wine accessories. However, what stole the show at the bazaar was our very own maroon and stylish Wine Club stall. A chic flat-screen flaunting the web portal, handy wine accessories and golf T-shirts lured groups to the stall right through the entire fest day.

On the way further into the amphitheatre Sula greeted the guests in style. Right from noon the wine and food were free flowing. Sula sold its entire range of its six premium wines for Rs.100 -150 a glass. Right from the Sula Brut sparkling wine to the Sula Chenin Blanc et al were briskly tipped into glasses for all the eager wine yuppies. For those who weren't particularly wine fans were not let down either since beer was thankfully available. (Rs.100/glass) Different kinds of cuisines like Chicken Biryani or Chikken Tikka (Rs.100/plate) from Kareem's and Vegetarian Pizza slices (Rs. 50/plate) or Penne Bruschetta (Rs.100/plate) from Little Italy satisfied varied palates from around the country.

These restaurants wore host hats to accompany the Sula team on whose property they house their restaurants as well. Miss Malini, RJ from Mumbai exclaimed; "How fabulous it is to not just drink great wine but also eat yummy food at such skimpy costs. It's one of the coolest things to look forward to in a fest such as this.” What is that one thing that she is looking forward to the most? To which she quickly replies "It's got to be the music and the energy. I can’t wait for it to be 4pm." And so as I echoed her thought and waited for it all to begin, I wandered into the space. Classy and colourful décor (courtesy Good Homes) at the rear of the stage laid out for everybody to relax and sip in the sun and wine before the party pumped up. Sonam, the tarot card reader who gracefully entertained enthusiastic questions on life, love and wine along with the funky tattoo artists added to the excitement. I got myself comfy with a glass of Sula Carbenet Shiraz and a few soft silk cushions under a beautifully draped shamiana. And as I enjoyed eavesdropping on weekend tittle-tattle and ogling at size-zeros wearing ultra-minis, I grooved to the guitar strumming working at a tech before the bands opened their titillating performances.

Dot 4 pm I shifted base from the shamiana to amphitheatre for a 10/10 view of the bands lined up. The Ghalat Family opened the music fest and played some upbeat and folk pop music to set the mood. Casually dressed, sometimes with a wine glass, sometimes with a beer glass; the Raat Gayi Baat Gayi famed band lead Ankur Tewari enticed people out of the shamiana shade into the summer sun to groove to his tunes. Followed by them and an assortment of boorish comedians, as the colour of dusk engulfed the space, a popular jazz-cum-alternative band called Something Relevent (STR) from Mumbai set the stage on fire. Whether it was wine induced or pure excitement; the female audience teased the good looking aka HOT vocalist, Aazin as he flirted and blushed. Having performed in college fests like Kaleidoscope and Mood Indigo to doing gigs at restaurants like Not Just Jazz by the Bay and Hard Rock Café this band has come a long way. STR was undoubtedly the perfect band for the occasion. They played songs from their new album Feels Good To Be Live. Words of their tracks ‘Horn OK Please' and 'City in a Situation' were well identified with by us city-dwellers who planned a getaway to the serene Nashik. More music, more food, more wine and more conversations kept up the pace of the evening.

As Anoushka Manchanda, a former Viva-girl and now famed playback singer was excited to perform along with her band Shkabang. "We are a bunch of musicians who have played tons of times, but separately as part of Pentagram, Bombay Black, Tough On Tobacco and even Bollywood. Together we plan on doing gigs for some kicks." She laughs “So here we are! She definitely did kick up the mood with her husky voice and pumped up the heat with her moves. Not singing too many cover, the band picked up a number popular numbers and got the wine-enticed audience to groove to her moves. Post the Shkabang fever the audience danced to the increasingly popular electronic band from Delhi called the Jalebee Cartel way past midnight. They could never get enough of it! Watching everybody rush to the wine counter urging for their last drinks at the Sulafest; Tanmay, the guitarist of STR exclaimed; "If a music and wine lover from Mumbai hasn't made it to this fest, he’s made a huge mistake! They better not miss it the next time. It will be bigger and better. And I hope I will be back to perform here."

I hope so too…sign!
